Using another brand of needle can cause tension issues. You will need to set the machine for a straight stitch with the length regulated between 4 and 5 to allow the thread to wrap around the extra thickness of fabric. You will also get better results if you use the metal all-purpose foot that was originally attached to the shank when you took the machine out of the box. If you want to use top stitching thread, use it in the upper tension only; use regular all-purpose thread in the bobbin. To sew other heavy fabrics, we recommend that you use a size 16 or 18 SINGER&#xAE; &#xA0;brand needle. You will need to set the machine for a straight stitch with length regulated between 3 and 4. Don&#x2019;t worry&#x2026;easy fixes below!First, make sure the bobbin-winding spindle (located on top of your machine) has been pushed back to the left for sewing. If it is not in the correct position, the needle will not go down and pick-up your bobbin thread.Next, make sure your needle is inserted correctly, as far as it will go, with the flat side facing back. Also, make sure your bobbin is in correctly (not backwards) and that the upper tension disks of your machine are threaded correctly. Make sure the presser foot is up when seating the thread through the upper tension.Now, it&#x2019;s time to draw up your bobbin thread.Turn the handwheel (TOWARDS YOU ONLY, never turn the handwheel away from you) and hold the needle thread lightly. Tug on it as the needle goes down and then comes up again. You should see a small loop come up through the needle plate (this is your bobbin thread), using the tip of a narrow object like a pencil or scissors, pull the loop up and then pull both threads (top and bobbin) under the foot and toward the back of the machine.If the above troubleshooting tips did not solve your issues, you may need to have your machine repaired for timing. If the timing is out, the needle thread is not meeting the bobbin thread in time to form a stitch.<hr>Q. Why is my machine skipping stitches?A. Skipped stitches can mean one of two things: needle issues or disrupted timing.First, your needle may be dull or damaged and needs to be replaced. You should also check that you are using the correct needle for the type of fabric you are sewing. For example, knit and synthetic fabric requires a ballpoint SINGER&#xAE; &#xA0;needle (style 2045). Next, check the needle is inserted correctly. The needle needs to be pushed as far up the needle shaft as possible. (It&#x2019;s easy to insert the needle half way, clamp it down and think it is inserted correctly.) Also, the flat part of the needle should be positioned towards the back. If the needle is not inserted correctly, it will not be able to pull up the bobbin thread and will cause skipped stitches.If the trouble shooting tips above did not correct the problem, please take your machine into a SINGER&#xAE; &#xA0;service center. Why is the thread looping/bunching under my fabric?A. Are you using a SINGER&#xAE; &#xA0;brand needle? Are you using the bobbins that came with your machine?Thread looping under your fabric is usually caused by not threading the upper tension correctly.With the presser foot lever in the UP position and tension set at 4, follow the threading guides/graphics on the top of the machine.Place the thread spool on the spool pin and secure with a thread spool cap.While holding the thread with your right hand, use your left hand to take the thread down into the tension channel around the bottom and up the other side. As the thread comes up the opposite channel, and reaches the top, you will need to slip the thread from back to front into the take up lever. Continue to thread the machine, but do not thread the needle.PRO TIP: Before threading the needle, perform this easy test to make sure the upper thread is threaded correctly. Making sure the presser foot is raised, pull the thread. It should pull easily. Now lower the presser foot, the thread should now resist when you pull it. There should be a significant increase in the tension of the thread. Why doesn&#x2019;t my stitch pattern match what is on my machine?A. Different stitch patterns require different stitch lengths in order to sew correctly. Depending on your machine model, a decorative stitch such as a crescent or bead stitch will require the Stitch Length dial to be set at a smaller number (between 0.5 and 1.5). Continue to decrease the Stitch Length until you obtain the desired effect. If your machine has stretch stitches, you may be required to set the Stitch Length dial to the &#x201C;S&#x201D; or Stretch setting to obtain the stitch you want.The width setting can also affect the look of your stitch. You will obtain the best results if you set the Stitch Width dial to the highest number.<hr>Q. How often should I oil my machine?A. Good question! If your machine manual does not include instructions on oiling, your machine has been pre-lubricated at the factory and will not need additional lubricating. However, you can put 2 to 3 small drops of sewing machine oil in the bobbin case area and on the needle bar as this will not harm the machine. You may also put a few drops on the handwheel where it meets the side of the machine.If your manual does call for you to oil the machine, and you use your machine every day, we suggest that you lubricate once a week. If you use your machine once a week, lubricate once a month. If you only use your sewing machine once a month, lubricate once every three months.We also recommend that you have your machine tuned-up by a qualified SINGER&#xAE; technician every 3 to 4 years to keep it in good running order.PRO TIP: If the machine has not been used for several years, we recommend a tune-up, just like you would do if you had not used your car for a long period of time. Lack of activity or movement will cause the lubricant to dry out and using the machine at that time can cause parts to break.<hr>Q. What types of thread should I use?A. Household sewing machines are designed to be used with regular all-purpose sewing thread. This thread can be purchased from your local sewing or fabric store. Most all-purpose thread is 100% polyester. If you are quilting, you can use cotton thread.You can occasionally use a heavy duty thread or buttonhole twist. However, using this type of thread constantly will eventually damage your machine&#x2019;s tension. If you do use heavy thread, be sure to use a appropriately sized needle (size 16 or 18) and increase the stitch length.<hr>Q. I can&apos;t see the take-up lever?A. The take-up lever is not visible to the eye; it is hidden behind the front panel of your machine.Make sure the needle is at the highest position, slip the thread into the opening between the front cover at the top of the machine, pull the thread down behind the lever and then pull it towards you, the take-up lever will then thread itself. This opens the hoop so you can place the fabric and stabilizer in between the outer hoop and the inner hoop.</li><li>Position the edge of the fabric so that it lays straight along the guide (A) to ensure that your designs are straight/parallel to the fabric edge.</li><li>Move the lever (B) up and to the right to lower the inner hoop. It will snap in place to close the hoop. The fabric should be taut in the hoop for best results.</li></ol>Embroidering an Endless Design<ol><li>Select and embroider the desired endless design. This can happen when the upper thread is not correctly placed in the tension mechanism during the threading process, and/or the thread has not been threaded through the eye of the take-up lever.<img src="https://attachments.gorgias.help/r1WE86rbDle6J4Mv/hc/Q9r0k7BYW92vg13y/2024051720-155a7ac7-7b17-4dbb-8675-a35286070e75-55c114d1-ff0b-4de6-97dc-ebc9cb500b9b.png" style="width: 692px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib">This can usually be resolved by first completely removing the upper thread from the machine, and then rethreading the machine. Lower the presser foot lifter so the foot is in contact with the fabric, then resume sewing.<img src="https://attachments.gorgias.help/r1WE86rbDle6J4Mv/hc/Q9r0k7BYW92vg13y/2024051720-715d537a-1df4-4aab-8f18-bfb9af74bd00-8216e0c4-1301-4f39-920c-9d1470e72101.png" style="width: 560px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib">The machine may also not feed fabric if the stitch length setting has been set to &#x201C;0&#x201D;, or too short of a stitch length setting for the thickness of thread being used. Increase the stitch length setting and resume sewing.Another reason the fabric may not be feeding is if the feed teeth are disengaged. Make sure the feed teeth are properly engaged for regular sewing.(Note: Your machine has drop feed for free-motion sewing, so if you have disengaged feed teeth, you need to re-engage feed teeth for normal sewing. To do this, first move the drop feed lever back to regular sewing position - you won&#x2019;t see the feed teeth raise up until you then turn the hand wheel toward you one full revolution).<hr>Thread Is ShreddingAs you sew, thread can begin to shred for various reasons.Thread can shred if the needle is dull or damaged, or if the needle is the wrong style and size for the thread being used. The thread should pass freely through the eye of the needle to sew properly. Your manual provides information about needle sizes to be used for the most common types of threads and fabrics.Some specialty threads, such as metallic threads, will feed more smoothly into the machine if they unreel vertically rather than horizontally, as vertical feed reduces the amount of &#x2018;twist&#x2019; on the thread. Your manual shows how to install your vertical spool pin, which your manual calls an Auxiliary Spool Pin.<img src="https://attachments.gorgias.help/r1WE86rbDle6J4Mv/hc/Q9r0k7BYW92vg13y/2024051720-58fe7ddb-b54c-4f41-b762-e53dabb02100-a89444dc-7a12-479c-883f-7e469e4a1c7a.png" style="width: 692px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib"><hr>Needles Are Breaking&#xA0;Needles can break if they are bent, dull or damaged. Discard&#xA0;<img src="https://attachments.gorgias.help/r1WE86rbDle6J4Mv/hc/Q9r0k7BYW92vg13y/2024051720-0ec9f0fa-dd3d-43ea-96ed-f723fcb91bbc-781d883e-1258-4422-a003-d2daee32617c.png" style="width: 300px;" class="fr-fic fr-fir fr-dii">the old needle and insert a new needle, appropriate for the thickness and type of fabric being sewn.Needles can break if they are not the right size for the fabric thickness you are sewing. Your manual has a chart that offers recommendations for needle size and type, according to the fabric and thread you are sewing.Needles can break if they have not been correctly inserted into the machine, which can occur if the needle clamp screw was not unscrewed enough when inserting a new needle allowing the needle to be seated all the way up as far as it will go in the needle clamp. Your machine manual has diagrams that illustrate this.Needles can also break if you are &#x201C;pushing&#x201D; or &#x201C;pulling&#x201D; the fabric while sewing (see images below), as this can cause the needle to deflect and then break. Make sure that the needle goes all the way up into the needle clamp and that the flat side (at the top section of the needle) is facing toward the back.Skipping stitches may also occur when the needle is the wrong style for the fabric. For instance, if you are sewing a stretch knit fabric using a regular point needle, you could be experiencing skipped stitches. Switching to a ball point needle will prevent stitches from skipping on stretch knit fabrics.Worn out or damaged needles can also cause skipped stitches on a variety of fabric types. Discard the old needle and insert a new one, appropriate for the fabric you will be sewing.<hr>Thread is Bunching at the Beginning of SewingThreads can get bunched up at the beginning of sewing if the top and bobbin threads have not been properly placed underneath the presser foot before starting to sew. Ensure that both threads are under the presser foot and placed toward the back of the machine before lowering the presser foot to start sewing.<img src="https://attachments.gorgias.help/r1WE86rbDle6J4Mv/hc/Q9r0k7BYW92vg13y/2024051720-65f8c56f-e17e-4357-8237-c40d19ef7209-c9a44981-2942-44e5-8153-56687f89a6d5.png" style="width: 692px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib">Threads can also start bunching at the beginning of sewing if the stitch length setting is too short for the stitch you have selected. Increase the stitch length setting. For example, satin stitches are very dense, and stitches need to have room under the presser foot to pass freely underneath. If you are sewing a dense stitch pattern, use a Satin Stitch Foot or Open Toe Foot for best results. <hr>Stitches Appear to Be Distorted<img src="https://attachments.gorgias.help/r1WE86rbDle6J4Mv/hc/Q9r0k7BYW92vg13y/2024051720-1ef067ac-5de8-4e20-b05f-4d93ff89b4e4-941d40e3-ade6-46c9-9649-0cf23aa73a4e.png" style="width: 300px;" class="fr-fic fr-fir fr-dii">Stitches can appear distorted on the fabric if you are &#x201C;pushing&#x201D; or &#x201C;pulling&#x201D; the fabric as you sew. Just let the feed dogs (or feed teeth) do the job of drawing the fabric along under the foot.Another reason stitches could appear distorted is if the incorrect presser foot is used. For example, dense stitches usually require the use of either a Satin Foot or Open Toe Foot, so that the stitching can pass freely underneath. If the regular All-Purpose Foot is used for dense stitching, stitches could get &#x201C;stuck&#x201D;<img src="https://attachments.gorgias.help/r1WE86rbDle6J4Mv/hc/Q9r0k7BYW92vg13y/2024051720-fc357c27-5471-4e09-97ec-3e7cd44f37e8-f332ea80-2a41-4db0-ba17-a4ba2c0bf530.png" style="width: 300px;" class="fr-fic fr-fir fr-dii">&#xA0;under the foot. Just switch to a presser foot more appropriate for these types of stitches. <hr>Fabric Is &#x201C;Tunneling&#x201D; or &#x201C;Puckering&#x201D; under the StitchesIf fabric appears to be pulling together under the stitches, this is a usually a sign that you should use a stabilizer or interfacing underneath the fabric. The stabilizer will support the fabric and stitches when you sew particularly dense stitches, such as when sewing decorative stitches or doing machine applique. More information about the various types of stabilizers available today, including which one to use for the fabric you are sewing, can be found at singer.com. Generally, use a tear-away stabilizer for woven fabrics and a cut-away stabilizer for stretch fabrics.<img src="https://attachments.gorgias.help/r1WE86rbDle6J4Mv/hc/Q9r0k7BYW92vg13y/2024051720-b5253939-ceaa-4349-a581-9665d4f769a1-cc51f123-0100-40af-b574-10cc9e73d040.png" style="width: 560px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib"><hr>Bobbin Doesn&#x2019;t Seem to Fit in the MachineIt is important that the bobbin used in the machine is the correct size and style. The machine&#x2019;s bobbin holder (where the bobbin sits in the machine) is designed to be used with a SINGER&#xAE; Class 15 transparent bobbin. Because this bobbin is transparent, it&#x2019;s easy to monitor your thread supply when sewing. When purchasing additional bobbins, be sure to look for Class 15 transparent bobbins. Do not use Class 66, Class 15J bobbins or Class 15 metal bobbins.<img src="https://attachments.gorgias.help/r1WE86rbDle6J4Mv/hc/Q9r0k7BYW92vg13y/2024051720-6bfccec7-a375-4d50-bf65-17c179209d41-6f859051-4124-487e-96f6-1a7c2586bd94.png" style="width: 692px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib"><hr>Bobbin is Not Working ProperlyThe bobbin may not work properly if it has been wound with thread that is not appropriate for use with a home (domestic) sewing machine.When winding the bobbin, do so at a medium speed. Winding bobbins at high speed can cause some types of threads to stretch during the winding process, possibly resulting in skipped stitches.Take care not to wind the bobbin too full. Threads can get jammed due to using types of thread that are not suitable to be used in a home (domestic) sewing machine. Using threads that are too thick or that have coating are likely to cause damage to a home sewing machine and should only be used on industrial sewing machines.Examples of thread types and weights that are acceptable to use on a SINGER&#xAE; Heavy Duty machine are: 100% polyester, all-purpose, 100% cotton, machine quilting, 30wt cotton, 12wt cotton, topstitching, jeans topstitching thread, bonded nylon (no larger than #69/Tex 70), and bonded polyester (no larger than #69/Tex 70).Note: It may be necessary to use an all-purpose thread or 100% polyester thread in the bobbin when using some types of heavier threads in the needle.
